Hello fellow desma students, my name is Hanna Wittmack, a fourth year student of the undergraduate architecture program. My initial study of choice for upper division education was chemistry but halfway through my first year, I found my passion for architecture. When studying abroad on a ship that circumnavigated the world I was taken aback by how different cultures took on designing their buildings. Thinking it would give me the opportunity to balance both math and art, I decided to continue my studies upon return. Yet was surprised to find the categorization of architecture within the art world. Even on my own campus the architecture building sits within the north side of campus under the jurisdiction of art, with a hike to the nearest science department.
The two cultures of art and science are physically separate which has led to a social differentiation between them. Those who study art spend their free time together and same with those who study science, with little overlap between the two. This social split has led to further divide the two cultures and the “type of person” who is a part of each. But there is still hope, in current literature, authors have coined a new term the “Third Culture” to define the upcoming study of technology which might be capable of bridging the gap between art and science. Both artists and scientists alike are beginning to use technology as a resource in their studies and hopefully will come to find that they aren't that different after all.

Hey how are you Hanna? My sister studies abroad and she tells me all the time about how different art and architecture makes her look at the world and life in different views. She says each new place with new pieces of art extends her mind to a whole new perspective on life. That's really cool that you are able to experience this as well. I like how you explained the two different cultures the way you did. You gave a clear insight on the way they operate. This was a great blog and I look forward to reading some more of your blogs.
